5 things you need to know about traveling to honduras

Each year, when we prepare to host teams for mission trips to Honduras, we inevitably have some nervous looks and one or two people come up to us with their phones pulled up to the State department’s ominous travel warning: Avoid Honduras. And honestly, it’s heartbreaking to me. It’s heartbreaking that a country that has welcomed me so well for nearly 2 decades is saddled with the title “most dangerous country in the world.”

I will not pretend that Honduras doesn’t have its challenges and safety concerns because it does. Honduras faces many battles with corruption and drug trafficking. But mostly its dangers affect its own people, not visitors. For tourists, Honduras is one of the safest destinations until you find that it is:

It’s dangerously beautiful.

Honduras is home to some of the most stunning landscapes you will ever witness. From majestic mountains to deeply carved valleys, from beaches and lakes to bustling cities, this country offers a diverse range of natural beauty. Now, I’m a mountain girl. I find so much strength and beauty in mountains, and the mountains of Honduras are no exception. My favorite mountain view is looking out on the valley of Jesus de Otoro. I say it often, but staring at those mountains, I don’t know how it’s possible to not believe in the Creator because whew, He did some good work in Honduras!

It’s dangerously delicious.

If you’re going to Honduras, get ready to indulge in the mouth-watering delights of traditional Honduran cuisine! Baleadas, pupusas, baleadas, tortillas con quesillo, pollo frito and did I mention the baleadas? The biggest danger you’ll face with the food in Honduras is an expanding waistline.

But what is a baleada? The baleada is famous in the local culinary scene. It’s a large flour tortilla with refried beans, eggs, mantequilla (similar to sour cream), and cheese and then folded in half. You can add avocado or plantains or even your choice of meat to it, but be forewarned: your life will never be the same after having a baleada.

It’s dangerously adventurous.

Whether it’s kayaking on Lago Yojoa or ziplining through or hiking the Copan Ruins, you will find rich history, exciting activities, and thrilling experiences in Honduras. The islands are home to the world’s second largest coral reef—right off the coast of Honduras. Go snorkeling and see a plethora of colorful fish and sea life. Or if you prefer above sea level adventures, pack your binoculars and be on the lookout for the Honduran Esmeralda—a beautiful emerald green hummingbird found just in Honduras.

It’s dangerously hospitable.

Yes, the views are beautiful, and the food is delicious, and the adventures are next-level, but nothing compares to the welcoming locals in Honduras. I have found the Honduran people to be one of the most heartwarming and hospitable people I’ve ever met. I’ve learned so much from their kindness and love towards others. Honest to goodness, I have never entered the home of a Honduran and not been offered a cup of steaming coffee or a cold Coca-Cola. NEVER. It’s not a chore for them either—it’s a part of their lives. They love welcoming others into their homes whether just to laugh and tell stories or to sit down for tortillas with salt. The most precious thing about Honduras are the Honduran people.

It’s dangerously life-changing.

If you go to Honduras, expect to witness the resilience and spirit of the Honduran people in the face of the challenges that can be transformative and will leave a lasting impression on your life.

Extreme poverty is still very present in the country, but don’t overlook the people to see only its poverty. Embarking on a mission trip to Honduras offers the opportunity for meaningful experiences and positive impact. The people of Honduras LOVE their country and they would love the opportunity to show off their country to YOU. I can promise you, once you step into this country, your life will be changed forever.

Get ready for an extraordinary mission trip to Honduras! Experience the breathtaking beauty, savor the delicious cuisine, and embrace thrilling adventures.
